General Information:

Isla Blanca is a remarkable, under-fished archipelago of islands located just 20 minutes from downtown Cancún.  All year round it is home to a plentiful supply of bonefish, permit, tarpon and snook.  Not only is the envied ‘grand slam’ a real possibility here, but a reality that has been achieved many times – even up to three times on the same day.

The Fishing:

There are very few tourist destinations as well known as Cancún that are able to provide good saltwater flyfishing conditions within such close and accessible range.  This is an ideal place for combining a family holiday with some of the very best sport that there is in flats fishing – or just to fish for the joy of what is on offer.  Bluewater fishing can also be arranged.

Isla Blanca has access to a rich fishing area of over 60 square miles. Vast flats, beautiful beaches and paradise islands are home to permit, tarpon, snook and bonefish.  This is a quiet area, with virgin natural surroundings, and without any significant fishing pressure. And the large number of islands and cays provides protection from any adverse weather that might be around. 

Bonefish at Isla Blanca are plentiful, and range in size from 3 to 8lbs, although they have been caught up to 13lbs.  Also, ‘baby’ tarpon are typically found locally from 10 to 30lbs, but travelling a bit further, the migratory species reach 140 lbs.  And permit come in any size up to 45lbs.

The guides are seasoned professionals who have an intimate knowledge of the vast fishing flats, the multiple mangrove lagoons and of where to find the fish.  The marina area is charmingly ‘rustic’, but the 18ft pangas are solid, suitable for two fishermen, and have an ample casting platform at the bow.  Unbelievably, at night the pangas are ‘guarded’ by a wild (but caged) tiger and leopard!

The Programme:

A programme can be organised for any duration of trip.  Each day will commence with a hotel pick-up by the guide at dawn in order to make the most of the fishing conditions, of the vast area to be fished and of the weather.  A lunch box will be provided and fishermen will be free to return at their convenience around mid-afternoon – in time to relax at the pool or the beach, or to enjoy whichever pleases of the multiple tourist attractions that Cancún is able to offer.

Accommodation:

The choice of accommodation in Cancún is vast, and we can arrange the fishing even if you have your own hotel already booked.  Our preferred hotel (priced below) is the 5 star all-inclusive, beach front, La Amada Resort, close to the fishing marina.  However, for unaccompanied fishermen we can also recommend the lower budget Hotel El Rey del Caribe as an alternative with good location, comfort and atmosphere.  It is a small garden oasis close to downtown Cancún, and closer to the fishing than most of the tourist hotels in the hotel zone.  (Alternative beachfront, 5-star hotels are also available).

Other Activities:

The things to do in and around Cancún are so plentiful that it would detract from the quality of the fishing to mention too may of them!  Highest on the list of activities however will always be the Mayan ruins, of which the closest to Cancún is Tulúm.  The whole of the Yucatán peninsula is truly an archaeological paradise.  Water sports of course abound, and the delightful island of Cozumel offers a different perspective on beach living.  As you would expect, eating out in Cancún is a rich and varied experience.  And the nightlife is never ending.

Seasons:

Bonefish, permit and ‘baby’ tarpon are around throughout the year, although the months of August to October are normally best avoided because of the possibility of hurricanes.  Indeed, there is the risk of occasional northerly winds in the winter months, to February.  The huge migratory tarpon are best fished during the period of mid-April to mid-September.
