Cerro Indio, Argentina

Argentina

General Information:

Cerro Indio offers stalking safaris (Big Game) from two locations – Tandil and Sierra de la Ventana, both in the Province of Buenos Aires.  At both locations guests may opt to ride out to the appropriate zones on horseback instead of 4x4 trucks.  Moreover, Cerro Indio is the largest ‘Bow Hunting’ operator in Argentina, so that almost all animals may be stalked using bows and arrows, if preferred to the traditional rifle.

Please note that at Tandil Cerro Indio also offers Duck Shooting programmes (Take me there..)

The Stalking:

The species that one can stalk from each of these locations, according to season, are the following:

Tandil:    Red Stag, Fallow Deer, Axis Deer, Water Buffalo, Blackbuck Antelope, Wild Boar, Feral Goat, Four Horned Ram, Scottish Black Face Ram, Dorset Ram, Puma, Pere David Deer, Capybara

Sierra de la Ventana:    Red Stag, Fallow Deer, Axis Deer, Blackbuck Antelope, Capybara.

Programme:

At Tandil there is a military air base and this will be the arrival and departure point for those guests taking charter flights.  There are some commercial flights that also use this airbase, but otherwise the nearest airport is Mar del Plata, which is some 200km from the Lodge.  Alternatively, Tandil is a 4 hour drive from Buenos Aires.

Guests travelling by charter flight to Sierra de la Ventana will use the airbase at Coronel Pringue, about 50km from the Lodge.  And those taking commercial flights will fly to Bahía Blanca, some 200km from the Lodge.  Otherwise the drive from Buenos Aires is some 6½ hours.

Whichever is the transport mode adopted, a Lodge representative will meet guests and transfer them to the Lodge.

At both Lodges, a minimum of 7 days safari is required.  The specific daily programmes can be agreed with guests in advance.  But normally each day will commence with a full breakfast, taken early with the aim of arriving at the shooting destination by sunrise.  At Tandil, because the distances are not large, guests normally return to the Lodge for lunch.  Where circumstances permit this is also the practice at Sierra de la Ventana.  However, it is common at this destination to take lunch at a small, attractive cabin in the area of the shooting.  Time is available at both destinations to take a siesta before returning to the stalking, which can continue until sunset.  On your return to the Lodge you will be greeted with a drink and will have time to freshen up before taking dinner.

Seasons:

The best time for deer stalking is from 10th March until the end of April given that this is the rutting season, first for the Red Stag and then the Fallow Deer.  The season however remains open until August.

The remainder of the Big Game can be shot any time between March and October.

Accommodation:

At Tandil, Estancia Acelain gives visitors the chance to glimpse the opulent seigniorial lifestyle of the great cattle and grain barons whose manor homes still dot the countryside.  Set in 16th century southern Spain, the origins of the estancia’s imaginative décor, architecture and landscaping are described in the literary masterpiece, The Glory of Don Ramiro, a book written by the present owner’s great-grandfather.  A prodigious collection of Spanish furniture dating from the 11th to 17th centuries still graces the estancia.

The Lodge itself has 6 double bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, two sitting rooms and two dining areas.  The house has central heating and a wonderful gallery which provides an extraordinary view of the park

At Sierra de la Ventana, the Lodge is also very comfortable, and has 6 double bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, a large dining/sitting room and a large internal patio which is the most popular relaxing area.  The park here is also very beautiful.

Other Activities:

From Estancia Acelain a number of other activities are available, such as horseback riding, exploring the 12,000 hectar Acelain estate, guided visits to the city of Tandil, Pejerrey fishing (kingfish), as well as enjoying typical ‘asados’, shopping for local handicrafts and watching gaucho folk dancing.
